Choosing tyres by terrain: tarmac, dirt, mud or mixed riding

The same bicycle, motorcycle or ATV behaves very differently depending on tread pattern. Find out which profile matches the terrain you ride most.

The same bicycle, motorcycle or ATV behaves completely differently depending on the tyres fitted. The right tread gives grip, control and even wear; the wrong one means slides, vibration and wasted rubber. Here’s how to choose, terrain by terrain.

Motorcycle, scooter and ATV tyres with tarmac, mud and mixed-terrain tread patterns

The Vee Rubber range covers the full spectrum: from fine road tread to aggressive mud knobs.

Why tread pattern matters

The tread has two opposing jobs: maximum contact on hard surfaces (tarmac) and bite + self-cleaning on soft ones (dirt, mud). No tyre does both perfectly — choose for the terrain you ride most, not occasional trips.

Tarmac: road, fine or slick tread

On hard surfaces, grip comes from contact patch — the more rubber on tarmac, the better. Choose a fine pattern with grooves mainly for water:

Hard-pack and gravel: intermediate tread

Forest roads, trails and gravel need a compromise: medium, closely spaced knobs that bite without squirming on hard sections. This is MTB & Trail territory on bikes and 50/50 profiles on motorcycles. Look for sharp shoulder knobs — that’s where corner grip is won.

Mud and soft ground: aggressive knobs

In mud, contact patch matters less — penetration and self-cleaning do. Choose tall, spaced knobs that reach firm layer and shed mud when spinning:

On the trail, the right tread is the difference between control and a slide — especially when wet.

Mixed terrain: the smart 50/50 compromise

Road to the trail, then dirt and gravel? Mixed tyres are built for exactly that. Pack ratios (50/50, 80/20) show the split: 50/50 balances road and trail; 80/20 is mostly road. Choose by real kilometres, not weekend plans — and remember correct pressure matters as much as tread.

On sand and dry dirt, tall knobs bite to the firm layer — a road tread would slide on the first corner.

FAQ

Can I use mud tyres on tarmac?

You can, but with trade-offs: tall knobs wear quickly on tarmac, are noisy and lengthen braking distance. If you often ride road between trails, choose a mixed (50/50) tread.

What does a 50/50 or 80/20 tyre mean?

The ratio describes intended use: 50/50 is half road, half off-road; 80/20 is mostly road. Pick the ratio for the terrain where you spend most of your time.

Which tread for an ATV used on road and fields?

An All-Road (mixed) tread is the right choice: medium, moderately spaced knobs that work on dirt and gravel without excessive vibration on tarmac. For heavy mud, switch to a dedicated Off-Road tread.
